- Do you get a hot & cold shower?
- Does your kitchen tap fluctuate in pressure
- Dore your garden sprinkler fluctuate up & down
This is called Cycling
What is cycling?
- Cycling is when a pump starts & Stops on a regular basis
This is a common complaint
Many pumps are installed without much thought as to the duty
Generally the pressure switch & pressure tank settings are not set correctly
Sometimes the duty changes after the pump is installed, extra tap installed, stock trough etc.
Cycling causes undue wear on the pump & motor
Capacitors will have their life shortened as well as the pressure switches
There are a couple of alternatives available for the household or small irrigation pump
The first is a press control
- This unit senses flow and the pump starts and runs continually until the flow of water stops, thus stops cycling
- Cheap to install
- Can be fitted to most pumps
The second method is a Variable speed pump
- This is a more expensive type of pump but has several benefits
- Lower running Costs, Only uses the power required to do the required job at the time Eg 1 tap or 5 taps
- Generally purchased as a packaged unit but some pumps can be retrofitted
- Perfect for variable duties in Irrigation systems
